I have a document called a Judgement that was signed by a judge on 2/12/2002 granting me alimony and a lump sum payment when I was granted my divorce. I know when I remarried that the alimony became null and void, but the lump sum payment and the lawyer fees that he was supposed to pay - what about those? Is there a statute of limitations on this? I never received any money. Gerry Simpson

Optional Information:
Hillsborough, North Carolina

Already Tried:
I haven't tried anything. No money to retain a lawyer.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy) - I would file a motion for contempt of court for non payment of the lump sum amount. I would assume there was a date by which it was supposed to be paid and that date is passed. You should not be affected by any statute of limitations since this is judgment and not an original lawsuit.

If you don't have an attorney you will have to file the motion yourself however many courts will award attorney fees in cases of contempt so it may be a good idea to try to at least get a consultation with a local attorney to review your situation. If you don't file for contempt I doubt you will ever see the money.
